The State, released in 2000, is the second album released by the Canadian rock band Nickelback. "Leader of Men" was the lead single from this album followed by "Old Enough", "Breathe" and "Worthy to Say". "Leader of Men" helped the band gained mainstream popularity and mainstream audience. It held a peak position of #130 on the Billboard 200. The album also held a peak position on Billboard top heatseekers albums charts position #3 in 2000. The album went Platinum in Canada in April 2002 and went Platinum in 2008 in the United States, the album was released in Europe in April 2001 but did not sell as well as in North America.

History

The State was recorded in 1998. In January 1999 The State was released independently with a blue album cover. In 1999 Nickelback first single "Leader of Men"peaked number 11 at the Canadian RPM rock charts. Later in 1999 Roadrunner Records signed Nickelback and re-released the album in America. The original blue album cover was replaced by a young boy in a jail cell in 2000. In 2000 Leader of Men reached the top ten on the U.S. Mainstream rock charts and stayed in the top ten for ten weeks. Then the second single "Old Enough" was released it reached the top 20 in Canada. It peaked at number 12 in Canadian RPM rock charts. It also peaked at 24 in the Mainstream rock charts and . Their third single "Breathe" was in the top ten for 2 weeks. The last single was "Worthy To Say" but it did not chart. In January 2001, The State was certified gold in Canada by CRIAA. In October 2001 The State was certified gold in America by RIAA. in April 2002 The State was certified Platinum by CRIAA In Canada. In October 2008 The State was certified Platinum by RIAA, selling one million copies.
